The Waseca County Horse Thief Detectives was organized in 1864, after a gang was caught stealing horses from a new settler to the area. Before justice could be served, the thieves broke jail and escaped. Local folks vowed to not let history repeat itself. They formed the new organization to protect the members they served. Over the next 20 years, the WCHTD proved its worth and put an end to horse stealing in Waseca County. Members could rest assured that a posse would be hot on the trail of thugs and bandits before they left the county! Today the need to chase horse thieves is obsolete, but the tradition and respect for those brave pioneers of Waseca County has kept the organization alive and well for more than 150 years!!
